In July 2014, CRA and GHD joined together to create a global leader in engineering, environmental consulting, and construction services.

The result is a company that is more than 8500 people strong, with 4000 employees in North America alone.

The goal of this merger is to build on the strengths of two leading companies to create a global team, adding significant growth and scale to our business, while retaining the advantages of our private, employee-ownership business model.

On July 1 2015, CRA changed its name to GHD and we are now operating as one company. Together we hope to provide our clients with a deeper and more diverse talent pool, across a broader geographic footprint, while maintaining the high level of service and responsiveness for which we are known.

The merger includes all of CRA and its family of companies, including Inspec-Sol. See the tabs below more information on our combined business.

CRA and GHD have officially merged, with all ongoing employee shareholders in CRA becoming shareholders of GHD. This unique feature of the merger makes it one of the largest private stock transactions in the engineering and environmental consulting industry.

Ian Shepherd, GHD’s CEO, says, “This is one of the largest true mergers to have occurred in our industry. We are building on the strengths of two leading companies to crea te a global team of more than 8500 people across five continents. We are adding significant growth and scale to our business, while retaining the advantages of our private, employee-ownership business model for creating client value.”

CRA was founded in 1976 through the merger of Frank A. Rovers & Associates and Conestoga Engineering. The company’s reputation for strategic project management at environmentally impaired properties began through a leadership role on the Love Canal cleanup project in Niagara Falls, New York, in the late 1970s. This project led in part to the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) Superfund program in the United States and gave CRA international recognition in the environmental field.

CRA’s emphasis on technical excellence and an entrepreneurial spirit accounted for much of its growth in the early years. With roots in civil engineering and municipal infrastructure, CRA grew to provide full-service engineering design and construction oversight to many municipalities starting in the late 1970s. Many of these early clients remain with the company today, a strong testament to the quality of the team and technical services. CRA eventually grew its geographic footprint throughout North America with 100 offices, employing approximately 3,000 people at the time of its merger with GHD.

Ed Roberts, CRA's President, says, "CRA’s goal has been to leverage our outstanding environmental, geotechnical and forensic engineering capabilities and broaden our business in the municipal infrastructure markets. With GHD we’re able to do this, while expanding our global footprint, particularly in Australia and Asia, to better serve our multinational clients."

By combining resources, melding business practices and pooling equity interests, the two companies become mutually dependent on each other for the creation of value over time. CRA and GHD will do this together by leveraging a deeper and more diverse talent pool, across a stronger geographic footprint.

When was the merger official?

CRA and GHD officially merged on July 2, 2014, with all employee shareholders in CRA becoming shareholders of GHD. This unique feature of the merger makes it one of the largest private stock transactions in the engineering and environmental consulting industry.

As of July 1, 2015, both companies began operating under the name of GHD. The expanded company covers a network of 200+ offices with 130 locations in North America.

How do the two companies' values and cultures compare?

Our merger was predicated on our shared cultures and values, with our now combined team focused on client service, employee development, and empowered business units. CRA's values of Safety, Ethics and Integrity and Responsiveness were synergistic and a direct reflection of GHD's values of Teamwork, Respect, and Integrity.

These shared values were the starting point for our merger discussions. We're a natural fit, culturally, geographically, and operationally.

How will this affect clients?

Our goal is to enhance the services we provide to clients, through more robust local networks and access to deeper global resources. Clients will be able to access our worldwide network of professionals, while still working with the same local staff they know and trust. We also have an expanded list of services, which can be found on the Services tab above.
