GHD has contributed to the successful completion of the Wakatipu Transportation Strategy in New Zealand. Developed to address the growing needs of the Queenstown Lakes region, the strategy promotes transport options that are integrated, responsive and sustainable. Importantly for one of New Zealand’s premier visitor destinations, the role of transport in protecting and enhancing amenity was a key factor in determining the final shape of the strategy.

The outcomes included transport demand management to make residents and visitors aware of alternative forms of transport and to reduce impediments to their use.

The strategy also includes road improvements and parking management, along with extensive passenger transport services, ‘park and ride’ and a possible ferry service connecting Kelvin Heights with central Queenstown.

The strategy was launched in Queenstown in November 2007 by the NZ Transport Minister Annette King and representatives of the Queenstown Lakes District Council, NZ Transport Agency and the Otago Regional Council.


GHD recently completed a transport assessment on the impacts of a range of proposed infrastructure expansions at the Port of Portland in south-western Victoria. The project is one of high significance and the assessment played a critical role in the evaluation of the planning application by Victoria’s Minister for Planning.

A Paramics micro-simulation transport model, developed by GHD, was a key feature of the assessment, allowing highly effective testing of the proposed impacts of the development on internal and external road and rail networks.

The model allowed graphic representation of individual truck, train and light vehicle movements and their interaction with each other, by animating in 3D the simulated vehicle movements. It was calibrated and validated to existing conditions and was then used to test a range of future scenarios, such as increased truck volumes and changes to the port internal road network.

The modelling exercise enabled GHD and the port to clearly demonstrate to all stakeholders the quantifiable implications of the proposed developments.

The transport assessment report concluded that the increased volume of vehicle movements in and out of the port, as a result of the proposed expansions, would not adversely impact on the internal and external road networks servicing the port.

The Victorian Minister for Planning has recently approved the proposed port expansions, based on the GHD assessment.
