U.S. WATER UTILITY OPTS FOR ASSET MANAGEMENT
The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) appointed GHD to lead the provision of asset management services in support of master planning and enterprise resource planning initiatives. WSSC is the eighth largest water and wastewater utility in the USA, owning USD12 billion of infrastructure assets. While instituting a range of short-term measures to combat the increasing incidence of water main breaks and leaks, WSSC is also taking a long-range strategic approach to address the growing challenge of ageing infrastructure.
GHD has been working closely with WSSC since April 2007 as part of a team to develop a 30-year Enterprise Asset Management Plan for all WSSC infrastructure, incorporating water, wastewater, communications and building assets.
Our team is currently assisting WSSC to map all asset management related business processes to identify the practice changes necessary to enable appropriate decisions to be made on investing in infrastructure to achieve ongoing performance in the delivery of services.
GHD is completing this work in partnership with Stearns and Wheler LLC, an environmental engineering firm headquartered in Cazenovia, New York. Stearns and Wheler is providing project management and specialist services in wastewater engineering.
ALLIANCE DELIVERY FOR WATER INFRASTRUCTURE
An alliance contract is set to establish new benchmarks for infrastructure delivery in a densely populated urban area of New Zealand’s largest city. The Clear Harbour Alliance project will improve the quality of stormwater discharges into Waitemata Harbour by separating the wastewater and stormwater systems for 935 residential and commercial properties around Auckland’s inner city suburbs.
GHD, with over 50 people having been involved in the project to date, is working alongside client Metrowater, as well as Opus International Consultants and contractor Downer EDi Works.
The Alliance is considered to be an effective way of achieving the required technical results while also improving customer outcomes and minimising environmental impacts.
The 30-month program of works, requiring some 33 kms of new wastewater, stormwater and private drainage, is now underway and the project is scheduled for completion in early-mid 2010.
