CIGI Campus

image

The Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) contracted GHD to execute a significant brownfield redevelopment project as part of the design and construction of an academic campus in uptown Waterloo, Ontario. The property was formerly occupied by a large distillery that operated for over 100 years.

The project included the design and construction of an academic campus on a 1.56 hectare property, which comprised the construction of the CIGI Campus (a three-storey, 114,000 square foot building) and upgrades to Father David Bauer Drive. Endangered species given more living room

image

Life has improved for the endangered fish species known as Redside Dace following the GHD-designed realignment of a 750 m river tributary to allow the construction of a new school and housing development in the city of Brampton, southern Ontario, Canada.

As part of the project, detailed geomorphic fieldwork and an electrofishing survey were carried out to inform the new design, a 758 m channel length natural corridor for the tributary, which is home to the Redside Dace and other fish species.

Natural Corridor Design and Permitting for Tributary 8B, Timberbank Development, Ontario, Canada

image

GHD was retained by Metrus Development Inc. to design a natural corridor for the first re-alignment in Redside Dace habitat to be approved by the Province of Ontario.

The Redside Dace (Clinostomus elongatus) is a species of fish native to Canada and is listed as Endangered by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) and as a Species at Risk in Ontario (SARO). Approximately 750m of Tributary 8B in the City of Brampton, Ontario, required re-alignment to facilitate a new school and residential housing development and the area was identified as Redside Dace habitat by the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) and Credit Valley Conservation, thus an Overall Benefit Permit was required.

Sediment Management and Dredging Strategy for Port Hope Harbour, Ontario, Canada

image

Historically, Port Hope Harbour in Port Hope, Ontario, has experienced sedimentation which significantly interferes with boating traffic. Investigations of the mechanisms and pathways of sediment transport both along the Lake Ontario shoreline and down the Ganaraska River have been limited.

On behalf of the Municipality of Port Hope, GHD committed to identifying the sediment sources, sinks, and dominate sediment transport processes to inform short-term management of sediment accumulation at the harbour entrance and aid in developing a viable plan for long-term sediment management with the goal of maintaining a navigational waterway.

Visualisation of Light Non Aqueous Phase Liquid, Ontario, Canada

image

After assessing an existing Light Non Aqueous Phase Liquid (LNAPL) collection and treatment remedy, GHD developed an alternative management strategy for a site involving multiple property owners.

The source of the LNAPL was attributed to a former 46,000 L (10,000 gallon) underground storage tank. GHD reevaluated the site conditions to develop a current and comprehensive 3-D LNAPL conceptual site model to serve as the basis for the remedial strategy and decision making.

West Vancouver Freight Access - Schedule 1

image

The Port of Vancouver manages a significant link in the rail corridor, providing critical connectivity for freight mobility throughout the Pacific Northwest. A chokepoint at the entrance of the port leads to track conflicts and causes severe congestion, hindering the port’s ability to maintain smooth operations and a competitive edge in the global marketplace.

GHD, (as a sub-consultant to DEA), was selected to complete Schedule 1, the catalyst in a series of important projects that will increase rail capacity and maximizes future port growth potential.
