The end result is GHD is delivering significant projects all over the world. Examples include desalination plant work in Australia, USA and the Middle East; major water recycling projects like the Western Corridor Recycled Water project in Australia; and work on a wastewater treatment plant so that it meets high nutrient removal standards to protect the quality of water in Chesapeake Bay in the USA. But significance is relative. Every project is important to our clients and we at GHD pride ourselves on the efficient and effective delivery of every commission large or small.

GHD also tackles the global water and wastewater challenges through International Development Assistance projects, and membership of leading organisations such as the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, the International Water Association and the International Desalination Association, among others.

Barrie WPCC Advanced Nutrient Removal Study

Barrie WPCC Advanced Nutrient Removal Study

GHD was retained by the City of Barrie  to undertake a comprehensive engineering study to investigate alternatives and develop recommendations for increasing the degree of wastewater treatment for phosphorus removal.

The 76 MLD plant is the largest wastewater treatment plant that discharges to Lake Simcoe.  The plant is regulated by an Environmental Compliance Approval issued under section 20.2 of Part II.1 of the Environmental Protection Act, R.S.O. 1990, C.E. 19 which contains Lake Simcoe Phosphorus Reduction Strategy Effluent Limits of 0.1 mg/L Total Phosphorus (annual average concentration), effective no later than June 2, 2015.  The project includes identification and initial screening of available treatment processes and technologies, completion of a detailed evaluation of selected alternatives, implementation and monitoring on pilot plant performance and final recommendation of preferred technology.  The primary objective of the pilot study was to consistently meet 0.04 mg/L total phosphorus.

CIGI Campus

CIGI Campus

The Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) contracted GHD to execute a significant brownfield redevelopment project as part of the design and construction of an academic campus in uptown Waterloo, Ontario. The property was formerly occupied by a large distillery that operated for over 100 years.

The project included the design and construction of an academic campus on a 1.56 hectare property, which comprised the construction of the CIGI Campus (a three-storey, 114,000 square foot building) and upgrades to Father David Bauer Drive. GHD supported the development of the master plan for the entire project.

Mountainview subdivision

GHD has played a key role in the development of the 80 hectare, 800 unit Fernbrook Mountainview homes subdivision in Haltan Hills, Ontario, Canada.

From its inception in 2009, GHD has been intimately involved in the development. We delivered detailed engineering drawings for internal municipal roads and services; erosion and sediment control drawings; design of channel compensation works; earthworks, servicing and road contracts; design drawings for utility co-ordination; and structural bridge design and the coordination of services under a local creek.

New asset management strategy pays dividends

GHD took a hands-on approach to working with the Region of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada to develop and establish an Asset Management (AM) strategy to meet the Region’s current and future demands in transportation, water and waste management, parks, fleet and facilities.

Meeting the Region’s goal to provide high quality, well managed infrastructure required a comprehensive change management approach including extensive stakeholder management. This enabled internal consensus and endorsement of the new business processes and AM practices.

Sewage station upgrade meets future demand

The regional Municipality of York in Canada’s Greater Toronto Area (GTA) looked at practical measures to cope with an expected population increase, and sought to boost its sewage system to cope until the year 2051.

To meet this requirement, GHD provided assessment and design services to increase the capacity of the Leslie Street pumping station by more than 45 percent, with an additional increase of another 50 percent for the near future.
