Alix Campbell, a civil engineer with GHD in Sydney, has
received the Young Water Professional of the Year award at the
annual AWA NSW Water Industry Awards.
This award is given to an outstanding young water
professional who has demonstrated their commitment to the water
profession and has made a significant contribution to the water
industry as well as the general community.
Alix has worked on numerous projects including the
Iluka Sewerage Scheme, the Rouse Hill Infrastructure Project, which
includes dual reticulation and stormwater detention basins, and is
currently on secondment working on the Avoid Fail Sewer Program for
the Sydney Water Corporation.
Alix studied as an undergraduate at University of
Sydney and went on to volunteer as an Australian Youth Ambassador
for Development (AYAD). Working on the GHD-managed Three Delta
Towns Water Supply and Sanitation Project in the Mekong Delta of
Vietnam, she helped to improve site safety, construction methods
and raise awareness of project programming.
Alix said: "Working as a volunteer in Vietnam and
using the skills I had gained working in the water industry in
Australia was an amazing challenge. I learned about the Vietnamese
culture and its people, about laying pipes in swamps but most of
all the experience was a huge eye opener in finding out who I am
and what I want to achieve in the water industry."
The award was given to Alix in recognition of her
experience working on water and wastewater projects as well as her
passion for helping others through her involvement in WaterAid as
Chair of the Sydney committee and as coordinator of the GHD
Sydney's Community Engagement Program.
The national award will be announced at OzWater in
2010.
