GHD, one of the worlds leading engineering, architecture and
environmental consulting companies, was recognised across the water
and environment sectors at the 2010 Consult Australia Awards for
Excellence on December 3rd.
Both the Sugarloaf Pipeline Alliance in
Victoria and the Nyrstar Groundwater Interception System in
Tasmania picked up ‘Silver Commendation’ in the Water and
Environmental categories of the awards. The Victorian
Desalination Project was also recognised in the Environmental
category.
The GHD-designed Groundwater Interception System is a free
draining horizontal bore system designed to reduce the loading of
heavy metals in groundwater discharge to the Derwent River.
Operational since mid-2009, the GIS has already removed
environmentally significant amounts of heavy metals from the
Derwent River ecosystem.
For its work on the desalination plant, GHD assisted the
Victorian Government, in partnership with AECOM, to obtain
environment and planning approvals in tight time restrictions for
the Victorian Desalination Project and a Works Approval from the
Victorian Environment Protection Authority.
The Sugarloaf Pipeline Alliance, comprising John Holland,
Melbourne Water, Sinclair Knight Merz and GHD, constructed the
Sugarloaf Pipeline which will transfer up to 75 billion litres of
water per year from the Goulburn River to Melbourne’s water
distribution network.
By profiling engineering and technical success, the Awards aim
to encourage more Australian firms to expand their business
horizons and meet the challenge of excellence and innovation.
