The Western Councils’ Sub Regional Landuse Strategy, a
collaboration between the Department of Planning and five local
councils has received a Commendation in the Rural and Regional
Achievement Category at the recent Planning Institute of Australia
(PIA) awards.
One of the world’s leading engineering, architecture
and environmental consulting companies, GHD developed the strategy
for the sub-region. The strategy focused on social, economic and
environmental sustainability at the local level, and balanced the
interests of the private sector, community groups and both State
and local government for more effective planning.
The NSW North Coast team of Katrina Burbidge and Mike
Svikis worked closely with the five NSW Councils, the Department of
Planning, key stakeholders and the public. A partnership was formed
which capitalised on the skills and available local knowledge of
all parties.
Senior planner Katrina Burbidge said “The night was a
great success, the Western Councils Sub regional Strategy was well
received by not only the judge Charles Hill but Minister Tony Kelly
as well.
“I believe that industry-leading knowledge, experience
and a significant track record in rural and regional planning
applied to this project made it so successful.”
Rainer Berg, Northern NSW Business Group Manager of GHD’s
Newcastle operations said “I am very proud that this project has
culminated in an award for GHD - Katrina and Mike brought this
difficult multi facetted project to completion to the satisfaction
of a number of regional Councils. Our commitment to completing this
project has now generated additional strategic planning work in
western NSW. Sharing this award with our local government clients
will assist us further in growing our business in regional
NSW.”
