GHD, one of the world’s leading engineering, architecture and
environmental consulting companies, has been awarded Tower
Project of the Year at the Construction Week Qatar Awards
2011.
GHD received the award for its iconic Al Bidda
Tower, situated on the waterfront in Doha’s business district. The
tower, designed by GHD’s architects and engineers in Doha, houses a
built-up area of almost 90,000sqm. An unconventional, diagonal
glass curtain-wall forms an integral feature of the design, along
with a unique floor-plate system that increases in size and rotates
in position as the tower rises, giving the impression of a moving
structure.
GHD Architect Shadi Saliba, commented, "It is
really great to win this for what has been a very challenging
project, and it was team effort to overcome those challenges,
"The main challenge was just the structure
itself; it is very complex. Every floor is a different size. The
location on the (Doha) Corniche meant it would stand out, and this
had a big impact on the design."
GHD was responsible for design and supervision
of the civil, architecture, structure and landscape for the QAR300
million project, including:
- Concept design and design management
- Design development including structural, MEP, civil and
landscape design
- Construction documentation and tender process management
- Contract administration and site supervision
- Post contract management and quality assurance
- Final certification process management
Judges for the award noted that Al Bidda “dominates the skyline of
Doha’s central business area and Corniche. Its form blazes out of
the desert sands in a striking, continually twisting face that
depicts clear form in structure and elevation.”
