GHD’s Senior Principal Geotechnical
Engineer, Andrew Leventhal, was honoured with the Professional
Engineer of the Year Award by the Sydney Division of Engineers
Australia at the Engineering Excellence Gala Dinner on Friday 16
September. The award recognises an individual who demonstrates
great achievements and leadership within the engineering
profession.
Andrew has successfully managed geotechnical
investigations and given major geotechnical and hydrogeological
input to designs of large scale projects. For more than 35 years,
he has contributed to the profession through his work and joint
efforts with both the Sydney Division of Engineers Australia and
the Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS).
Andrew’s success started in 1980 where he ran
an on-site investigation team at Mae Moh in Thailand. More
recently, his creativity and innovative approach were demonstrated
during his involvement in the construction of a 25 km freeway which
covered the majority of the stratigraphy of the Newcastle Coal
Measures; and current underground mining beneath the Main Southern
Railway by Tahmoor Colliery.
Andrew has focused much of his experience on
Landslide Risk Management, (LRM) having first approached the issue
professionally in 1985. To contribute to community wellbeing in
this area, he led the Landslide Taskforce in 2007, the Risky
Roadshow in 2002, and represented Australia in international LRM
workshops. Andrew also led the steering committee for the Risky
Roadshow 2011 seminars across Australia.
Earlier this year, Andrew was recognised as
the “Geotechnical Practitioner of the Year” by the Australian
Geotechnical Society (AGS) in recognition of his outstanding,
sustained and distinguished contribution and commitment to the
Society, and his profession within Australia.
GHD Sydney Manager David Kinniburgh noted,
“We’re lucky to have Andrew as a dedicated member of the GHD team.
This award recognises his commitment to the engineering profession
and his positioning as an inspiration to his peers.”
