30 October 2011
One of the world’s leading engineering, architecture and
environmental consulting companies, GHD hosted the graduation
ceremony for the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) Lucy
Mentoring Program on 20 October 2011.
The Lucy Mentoring Program focuses on undergraduate
women studying engineering and information technology to raise the
profile of those fields as options for study and career to young
women. The program was originally designed by the NSW Office for
Women's Policy (Department of Premier and Cabinet) to inspire,
motivate and educate young women about the opportunities available
for employment and leadership in the public and private
sectors.
This year, four of GHD’s people were selected by
UTS as Lucy Mentors. Over the course of 5 months, the mentors from
a diverse group of industry partners actively supported female
students seeking a career in the engineering and IT fields. The GHD
mentees visited the office environment, attended conference
activities and received valuable insights to engineering
consulting.
The 2011 program kicked off in May and concluded
with the graduation last week. Each student gave a presentation on
their experience with the program and key achievements gained from
their mentors.
The evening concluded with speeches from Philippa
Cail, APAC Solution Consulting Manager, NetSuite, and Sarah
Wheeler, Principal Water Engineer, GHD, on the changes both women
have seen over their time in their respective industries. Sarah was
also a mentor to one of the 20 UTS students and shared the benefits
of her experience in the role.
GHD Manager Sydney David Kinniburgh noted, “Our
involvement in the program has proven to be a great success in
helping give young women in engineering access to the opportunities
available in the field and seeing how our own female engineers are
excelling in the profession.”
