GHD, one of the world’s leading engineering, architecture and
environment consulting companies, brought together Victoria’s
brightest transportation professionals and policy setters at the
third and final Moving Melbourne seminar at Federation
Square on 5 April 2011.
The seminar, ‘Showing off your best assets. Making the most
of infrastructure across the lifecycle’ looked at how
Melbourne can put its best foot forward when it came to optimising
asset investment decisions over the entire lifecycle.
GHD Manager Victoria Phil Duthie said, “The seminar
enabled five Melbourne-based panellists to paint a clear picture
about the realities of our challenges and provide insight as to how
we can move forward.
“We examined the challenges of our aging
infrastructure, increased scrutiny over public spend and how to
balance the trade-offs between the costs of operating, managing,
upgrading and extending the life span of our transport
infrastructure.”
Some of the ideas that formed throughout the day
included the requirements:
- To have a proactive approach in how we understand
and manage our assets, and balancing this with reacting to factors
such as maintenance issues
- For asset management to be part of an
organisation’s culture. To be effective, everyone needs to be
‘singing from the same hymn sheet’ – including maintenance
engineers, finance, projects, human resources and procurement
- For all asset management practises and investment
decisions to be linked to a clear, focused and long-term
strategy
The seminar series was kick started by Enrique
Peñalosa former Mayor of Bogotá Colombia and painted a bigger
picture as to the type of city Melbourne aspires to be. The second
seminar looked at how we can manage demand to make the most of our
existing transport infrastructure.
With more than 100 people in attendance at each seminar, Moving
Melbourne ended on a high, with industry leaders hailing the series
as an excellent initiative and describing the topics as edgy and
thought provoking.
