GHD, one of the world’s leading engineering, architecture and environmental consulting companies, is caring for the people in local communities in the Greater Toronto Area. In the first half of 2013, employees from across the region put their collective energy towards combating hunger and supporting cancer research and summer programs for children.

Since 2006, GHD has been a proud supporter of CANstruction, an annual charity design and build competition of structures made entirely out of canned food. As part of this competition, GHD’s team has donated more than 7700kgs of food to the Toronto Daily Bread Food Bank over the past eight years.  GHD’s involvement in the 2013 competition resulted in the donation of more than 1000 kg of food, while the structure won in the ’Best Meal’ category.

To support the operation of Camp Oochigeas – a privately funded, volunteer-based organisation that provides kids affected by cancer with a unique opportunity for growth – GHD participated in this year’s Sporting Life 10km run/walk event in Toronto. More than 40 GHD people took part in the event, contributing to the fundraising goal of CAD2.4 million. With a united spirit, GHD’s participants completed the event in harrowing conditions, experiencing rain, hail and snow throughout the day.

The SickKids Foundation also received a boost from GHD, which participated in the 19th annual Heatwave Beach Volleyball Corporate Team challenge at Ashbridges Bay, Toronto. GHD’s team raised CAD578 for the foundation, which is a pioneer in the study of cancer stem cells. Each year, approximately 1400 Canadian children are diagnosed with cancer and a quarter of these children will come to SickKids. GHD’s support helps SickKids operate the largest pediatric cancer centre in Canada.
