GHD, one of the world’s leading engineering, architecture and environmental consulting companies, has made some exciting developments in the advanced application of water-related membrane technologies recently.

Developed by GHD professionals, these innovations have enabled the company to take strides in the advanced treatment of wastewater and water reuse, including optimising membrane bioreactor (MBR) systems, increasing the success of osmosis reuse treatment plants, and minimising the environmental impact of wastewater treatment.

These leading-edge technologies and applications will be presented by GHD’s advanced membrane treatment engineers at the 7th International Water Association (IWA) Specialised Membrane Technology Conference and Exhibition for Water and Wastewater Treatment and Reuse in Toronto from August 25 to 29. To find out more, join GHD’s professionals from across the globe at the conference, and read about their presentations below.

  • Pilot Study Stress Tests Demonstrate Tertiary Membrane Filtration System's Ability to Reliably Meet Ultra-Low Phosphorus Limits will be presented by Kristi Perri, senior environmental engineer. Kristi will introduce the case study of the 76 ML/d Barrie Wastewater Treatment Facility (WwTF). This tertiary membrane project proved complex due to the strict effluent total phosphorus (TP) load limits set by local regulations to protect Lake Simcoe, into which the Barrie WwTF discharges. Kristi will discuss the significant challenges presented by the ultra-low TP limits, and the way the membrane technology can be applied to overcome these challenges.
Pier 2 room, Tuesday August 27 at 9:40 am.
  • Lessons Learned on Start-up, Testing and Optimisation of MBR Systems for Enhanced Nutrient Removal will be presented by Thor Young, Service Line Leader for wastewater treatment and reuse in North America. Based on his experience and lesson learned, Thor will identify and discuss key insights and techniques for the optimisation of MBR systems and that can be applied to enhanced nutrient removal projects in the future.
Pier 2 room, Tuesday August 27 at 1:40 pm.
  • Pre-treatment for Micro- or Ultra-Filtration/Reverse Osmosis Reuse: Experience from Australia will be presented by David Solley from Brisbane, Australia. David will draw from his experience from six micro or ultra-filtration/reverse osmosis reuse treatment plants in Australia to discuss the impact of pre-treatment on membrane performance. The talk will include a reflection on the selection of pre-treatment approaches and the impact on cost and successful membrane performance.
