The people and clients of GHD’s Mackay office gathered recently to celebrate the company’s 35th anniversary in the region and mark the opening of their new office in Wood Street.

The engineering, architecture and environmental consulting company opened its doors in Wood Street in 1976 in offices once located on the site of Centrepoint Arcade.

Newly appointed Chairman Russell Board attended the function, saying he was proud of what the Mackay office had achieved throughout its history.

“GHD is a global company, yet we have a strong and long standing commitment to building our regional offices. It enables us to get closer to our clients and better meet their needs,” Russell said.

“One of Mackay’s first projects was the design of the water treatment plant on Nebo Road, and since then we’ve been involved in many significant transport, urban development, water, sewage, building and environmental projects throughout Mackay, the Whitsunday and Central Highlands,” he continued.

Office Manager, Mr Robby Chohan, said the milestone was a significant achievement made all the more momentous by the unveiling of a modern office.

“This has been a great opportunity for us to showcase our new premises as well as bring back some of our former managers, including Sam Caltabiano, the first Office Manager in Mackay,’ Robby offered.

“Mackay has been a fertile development ground for our staff over the years and we can now boast that several of our most senior staff at GHD have worked in Mackay at some point in their career.

“John Baird, our second employee in Mackay is now GHD’s General Manager Australia and John Gersekowski, our third employee, is now General Manager Operational Support, so we have a strong tradition in that regard.”

“The projects we have been involved in over the years vary from water treatment plants to cane rail infrastructure, and from road upgrades to industrial developments.

“These projects contribute to positioning Mackay as a vibrant and growing community and we look forward to continuing this well into the future.”
