Bega Bypass

image

In May 2009, the Labor Member for Eden-Monaro, Mike Kelly MP, announced that GHD would partner with the RTA for the Concept and Detailed Design of the HW1 Princes Highway Bega Bypass.  Since then work on the design, geotechnical investigation and review of environmental factors for the bypass has progressed significantly, with documentation for construction tender having been completed.

The project includes 3.6 km of two lane rural highway, three bridges connecting communities with the Bega township, four reinforced soil retaining walls and three intersections.  The purposes of the project are to accommodate B-Double movements and to create the potential for reduced crash rates in the area by creating better transport pathways for local communities and highway users.

Securing Canberra’s water supply

image

GHD’s work with the ACT Electricity and Water Corp (ACTEW) on the Cotter Dam is helping to secure the territory’s water supply and raising the bar for sustainable construction. The AUD363 million project involves building a new 80 metre high wall to increase the main dam’s capacity from 4 gigalitres to 78 gigalitres, and building two saddle dams with walls 15-20 m high.

Working in an alliance with ACTEW and construction companies Abigroup and John Holland, GHD has been responsible for engineering design, stakeholder liaison, environmental approvals and safety and quality control during construction. GHD’s analysis identified the best location for the dam wall, and a cost-effective construction method using roller compacted concrete (RCC).

Goulburn-Murray Rural Water

image

This building, completed in mid-2005, makes a fresh statement in a town that features ageing building stock, while also managing to be a practical and economic structure. The addition to the Kerang in northern Victoria houses Goulburn-Murray Water’s regional administration and engineering staff.

The unusual waveform theme expressed in the shaping of the main and supplementary roofs relates to the client’s waveform logo and to their business of harvesting, storing and distributing water resources across northern Victoria.

Canberra Centre Consolidation

image

The ACT Government-owned National Convention Centre, Canberra was originally opened in 1989 and has been operated by the lessee, Intercontinental Hotels Group since 2001. It was one of the earliest specialist convention and exhibition facilities constructed in Australia. The inferior state of repair and poor functionality of the centre approaching the end of its life cycle was contributing to a declining market share of major conventions.

The project to reposition the National Convention Centre was initiated by the ACT Government and focussed on improving marketability though achieving value for money in addressing the sense of arrival and place, venue flexibility, delegate amenity and visitor experience. A capital upgrade program to refurbish the facility and achieve compliance with current building standards and reduce operating and maintenance costs was a key part of the redevelopment.
