Wollongong

Our Wollongong office opened in 2006. We provide consulting services to major industry and mining, transportation, water and wastewater, developer and state and local government clients throughout the Illawarra region.

Living and working locally means that our teams are able to develop closer working relationships with our clients. We understand the local context in which projects are undertaken including the local drivers, stakeholders and the particular issues and challenges for projects in the Illawarra region.

Recent company mergers with Hassall & Associates, Cameron, Chisholm & Nicol (NSW) and the Wollongong-based, yet national, Meyrick & Associates team have strengthened GHD's position in architecture, strategy and evaluation and infrastructure and agricultural economics.

While the Wollongong team delivers the full suite of GHD's services through our local office, we source specialist skills and additional resources when required on particular projects from our Sydney, Parramatta and Artarmon offices as well as the Nowra, Wagga Wagga and Canberra offices. We manage these additional resources from our local base meaning costs are appropriately controlled and solutions are matched to local requirements and expectations.

Dendrobium Mine Hydrogeology

image

The Illawarra region contains some of Australia's best coking coal resources. These have been mined since the 1880's, providing coal for both export through Port Kembla and for use in the steelworks (now operated by BlueScope Steel).

To maintain supply for steel making, BHP Billiton is developing the Dendrobium Coal Mine. This underground mine will recover coal from the lowermost 3.2m of the 9m thick Wongawilli Seam by longwall mining methods (see an individual chock in the panel to the right) at a rate of up to 5Mtpa ROM for 30 to 40 years. Coal from the Wongawilli Seam is an essential component of 'Illawarra Blend' premium coking coal, which is known for its specific steelmaking qualities.

Bega Bypass

image

In May 2009, the Labor Member for Eden-Monaro, Mike Kelly MP, announced that GHD would partner with the RTA for the Concept and Detailed Design of the HW1 Princes Highway Bega Bypass.  Since then work on the design, geotechnical investigation and review of environmental factors for the bypass has progressed significantly, with documentation for construction tender having been completed.

The project includes 3.6 km of two lane rural highway, three bridges connecting communities with the Bega township, four reinforced soil retaining walls and three intersections.  The purposes of the project are to accommodate B-Double movements and to create the potential for reduced crash rates in the area by creating better transport pathways for local communities and highway users.

Oceanlinx – Port Kembla Wave Energy

image

GHD was commissioned to design the electrical interconnection and control system for a 300kW wave-to-energy system in Port Kembla, New South Wales.

The wave to energy conversion is based on a parabolic wall to reflect and focus the incoming waves, oscillatory wave chamber and turbine. Later commissions included a review of the basis of design and gap analysis.
