Kirkwood Road Structure Plan

Building on its established track record of providing successful projects for the Gladstone Regional Council, GHD has been engaged to assist with the implementation of its Kirkwood Road Structure Plan for the southwest section of the city.

The plan was produced in 2004 and caters for a population increase of more than 5,000 people, and presents a blueprint for the future of an important part of the city. It includes the construction of Kirkwood Road from Dawson Highway to Gladstone/Benaraby Road, providing a number of new traffic routes from the area.

Third Rail Receival Facility

GHD designed the third rail receival facility as part of the AUD750 million expansion of the RG Tanna Port in Gladstone Queensland.

The design and construction of the third rail receival facility in Gladstone is a unique engineering feat due to the challenging design requirements, difficult site conditions and fast track construction.

Feed Study Prepares Way for New Gas Field

GHD has commenced a front-end engineering and design (FEED) study in collaboration with constructor Delco Australia for the development of a new gas field in Queensland.

Sunshine Gas commissioned the study for its Lacerta Coal Seam Gas field north of Roma. If the study outcomes and the regulatory approvals occur, GHD and Delco will proceed to full material procurement and construction of the gas plant.

Crinum East Underground Coal Mine, Queensland

The Crinum East Underground Coal Mine is located approximately 50km north-east of Emerald, with production planned at 5.5Mtpa for a mine life of 5 years.

GHD was commissioned to carry out detailed design for civil, mechanical and electrical components of ramp and stockpile conveyors, including a sub station.

Stockpiles 19, 20 & 21

The RG Tanna Coal Terminal currently exports 40 Mt of coal annually. CQPA expects to achieve 65 Mtpa by 2009 through an aggressive expansion program, which includes the increase of stockpiling capacity from 5.4 mt to 6.3 mt with the addition of three stockpiles. GHD were engaged to provide full engineering services (mechanical, structural, electrical, civil and geotechnical) from preliminary design through to detailed design and documentation for the following components:

  • Three concrete reclaim tunnels, stockpile dischargers andconveyors,
  • Three transfer towers,
  • Two overhead conveyors, including 522 meters main conveyor,
  • End / transfer towers,
  • Traveling tripper,
  • Stockpile civil works,
  • Drainage and sedimentation pond, and
  • Ancillary services such as light towers, dust suppression
  • systems, electrical substations and dozer refueling station.

Gladstone Coal Terminal expansion

As part of the expansion to increase the capacity at Gladstone Port Authority‘s RG Tanna Coal Terminal from 30mtpa to 60mtpa, works were undertaken to increase storage capacity.

The terminal receives coal by rail from the southern Bowen Basin (from Gregory in the north to South Blackwater) and from Moura and Callide.

Bauxite Mine Enviro Impact

GHD have been working with Chalco Australia, a commercial arm of the Aluminium Corporation of China, in their tender and approvals for development of the Aurukun Bauxite resource in north Queensland.

This included initial site assessments, preparation of the environmental components of the pre-feasibility study and preparation of environmental approvals for both the mine and refinery components of the project. Key to the approvals will be Environmental Impact Statements currently in preparation for both sites.

Rio Tinto Alcan Yarwun

Rio Tinto Alcan Yarwun provides smelter grade alumina to Australia, New Zealand and export markets. The Yarwun Refinery is about 10km northwest of Gladstone, Central Queensland, with its Residue Management Area (RMA) approximately 10km west of the refinery.

GHD has been involved on this project since the site selection and design phase, when our Tailings group undertook the site study and detailed design for the RMA, including an extensive geotechnical mapping program and installation of a groundwater monitoring network.

Cannington Mine Tailings Storage Facility, Queensland

GHD provides specialist geotechnical and tailings advice to numerous metalliferous mine waste disposal sites in Australia, such as BHP Billiton’s Cannington Mine.

Located south-east of Mount Isa in Queensland, Cannington is an underground mine producing silver, lead and zinc concentrates. GHD has been involved in the Cannington Mine since start-up in the mid-1990s.
