The city covers an area of approx. 117sq km and is centred at the intersection of the Warrego and New England highways. Located on the edge of the Great Dividing Range, at an altitude of 700m above sea level, it offers breathtaking views over the Lockyer Valley region to the east.

GHD’s Toowoomba office was established in March 2005 with a staff of three and has since become an integral part of the South Queensland Operating Centre. Since that time we have continued to show our commitment to the region through sustained growth of our staff, client base and workload. Currently the office has 20 staff and provides a diverse range of services to meet our clients’ requirements.

St Patricks College Gympie Building

GHD has worked closely with St Patrick's College Gympie to build a new science and languages building including classrooms and landscaping.

St Patrick's College is located in Gympie on the top of Calton Hill. Building on the relationship with the college and their graphics staff, GHD was able to assist with providing support to the school with computers and graphics training, also providing St Patrick's College with a school traineeship program. GHD was involved with the design development, contract documentation, contract administration, architectural design and landscaping projects in relation to the science building. The classrooms were completed in July 2010, in time for Semester Three.

Toowoomba Water Pressure and Leakage Management

Toowoomba City dams reached critically low levels due to the drought in Queensland. GHD was commissioned to identify and minimise system losses in the city’s network through pressure management and leakage detection.

The project included the preparation of preliminary designs for two pilot district metered areas (DMA). The ultimate purpose of the DMAs was to facilitate the development and implementation of a focused strategy to demonstrate water saving targets could be achieved. GHD developed an innovative technique to identify those areas in the whole network that would benefit most from pressure reduction.

Toowoomba Regional Sewerage

Following the amalgamation of eight local government boundaries, GHD was commissioned to develop a high-level strategy for the Toowoomba Regional Council for the planning of wastewater treatment plants and effluent reuse.

The study included a review of previous planning studies completed by the former local authorities, a population review and a look at loadings. A brief assessment of the status of the area’s existing sewage treatment plants was undertaken to determine their capacity and if they should remain as a stand-alone system or be integrated with other systems.

Multipurpose Covered Arena (Dalby)

GHD undertook the design, documentation and construction phase management for the covered arena at Dalby Showgrounds, Queensland. The 90m by 60m clear span structure provides a covered venue for equestrian and other multi-disciplinary events.

The structure covers a 60m by 40m equestrian area, grandstand seating and a 55m by 10m ancillary building that contains amenities, function and bar areas, and a viewing deck.

Six Ml Water Reservoir (Oakey)

GHD undertook the structural options analysis, design, and documentation and project management for a new 6ML reservoir at Oakey, Queensland for Jondaryan Shire Council.

GHD managed the tender and construction management phase for the building of the reinforced concrete reservoir and the additional replacement of an asbestos roof to the adjacent 2ML reservoir.

Vegetation Mapping Extension Study

Challenge

The effect of urban expansion on the natural environment has the potential to significantly impact the conservation of significant vegetation communities. Particular types of vegetation, both remnant and non-remnant, have specific relevance to conservation planning and bush fire hazard management. Accurate vegetation mapping is of considerable importance in minimising a range of potential impacts on vegetation communities and providing adequate decision support for management and conservation planning in the midst of urban expansion and development.

Paul Clark

Paul has more than 17 years' experience within the defence and government sectors, and eight years’ experience in the delivery of various complex projects including building, structural, civil, construction, IT, communications, electronics and electrical for numerous clients. He has experience in contract, risk, program and project management and operations and maintenance roles.

Paul has been involved in a number of projects within restricted, remote and operational areas, and is familiar with the requirements for access and completion of projects under these conditions. He has strong involvement with the Australian Institute of Project Management.

Carolyn Pappin

Carolyn Pappin is an award-winning spatial professional and is GHD’s Service Line Leader for Spatial Sciences. She leads a team of more than 120 people across GHD’s international network to deliver business and technical solutions to industry. With 20 years consulting, research and non-government organisation experience, Carolyn has deployed hundreds of GIS solutions to support strategic decision making within the context of natural resource management, planning, tourism, infrastructure and community development in Australia, the Pacific, Asia, South America and the United Kingdom. Her extensive industry experience includes advanced spatial analysis, including site and corridor selection, scientific visualisation, GIS capacity building and implementation planning, spatial project management and information management. As a Churchill Fellow, Carolyn has undertaken advanced cartographic and visualisation research at Oxford Brookes University and Harper Collins in the United Kingdom. She continues to contribute to the spatial industry as a Technical Advisory Committee member for the Bachelor of Spatial Sciences program at the University of South Queensland.

Carolyn is a certified Geographic Information Systems Professional - Asia Pacific (GISP-AP) and brings significant experience to the planning, scoping and delivery of spatial information solutions.

Andrew Scovell

Andrew is a principal infrastructure engineer with over 20 years' experience in the project and design management of key infrastructure projects for local authorities. He has undertaken structural design and project management of water and sewerage pump stations, sewerage treatment structures, concrete and steel reservoirs, pools and roadworks.

Toby Loxton

Toby has over 15 years’ professional experience in water resource engineering projects, including flood studies, catchment yield analyses, mining developments, and flood damage studies in Australia and overseas. His discipline areas include estimation of surface runoff, open channel design, sizing of dams, water balance and management assessments, water quality impacts, and sediment and erosion control. Toby has applied these skills to develop master drainage plans, investigate impacts of flood behavior and design infrastructure to accommodate a range of flood scenarios for more than 100 projects.

Kevin Masterton

Kevin Masterton is a senior environmental engineer with 11 years’ experience as an environmental consultant, based in the Toowoomba office. Kevin’s key experience includes groundwater investigations, assessment for site contamination, site remediation (soil and groundwater), facility decommissioning, project and contractor management as well as preparation of environmental reports such as review of environmental factors, environmental audits and site based environmental management plans.

Michael Matthey

Michael has 20 years of design experience including planning and design of both rail and road, civil and structural infrastructure. During his 15 years working with Queensland Rail (QR) civil engineering section, he worked on numerous bridge and civil projects across Queensland, often in liaison with Main Roads and/or local councils. Since joining GHD, he has played a lead civil designer role on various bridge and other civil structure projects for both Main Roads and local councils. Michael’s design skills include both civil and structural detail design and drafting.
