Ceduna Airport in Shape for the Future

image

The district council of Ceduna in South Australia requested a concept and detailed design for a new terminal building for the city’s airport. The GHD design and planning layout for the terminal building caters for a peak load of more than 200 people and makes allowances for any future expansion by maintaining operational continuity throughout the facility.

The circulation spaces provide for efficient and unfettered movement. They are based on a logical relationship between patrons and the services they need to use. In keeping with strict security requirements, the concept design maintains a clear distinction between public and secure spaces. There is also allowance for baggage screening processes, should they be required in the future.

Starlight Room

image

GHD is pleased to have played a significant role in this mission, recently completing the design and implementation of a new Starlight Room at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide. This is the first of four new rooms to be completed in hospitals around Australia.

With a focus on escape, GHD has created an environment that is a departure from the rigours of traditional hospital life. Starlight Express Rooms have typically adopted an outer space theme, and it was GHD’s task to revisit the concept, maintaining a sense of ‘another world’ for young patients.  The new concept features an ‘internal garden’ – bringing an abstract outdoor environment indoors. The intent was to add warmth, texture and comfort to the spaces patients and their families visit.

Waterproofing the South Stage 1

image

GHD was engaged as the lead consultant for the detailed design of two wetlands, two detention basins, a 93 ML storage dam at Wilfred Taylor Reserve and approximately 18km of non-potable water distribution network to harvest 850 ML per annum of stormwater runoff from the Christie Creek catchment. Our scope included:

  • Concept design of wetlands, detention basins, distribution system and storage dam
  • Functional design advice regarding distribution system and route assessment advice
  • Hydraulic modelling and optimisation of water distribution network
  • Detailed design of earthworks, access roads, drainage structures, 93 ML storage dam, wetlands and detention basins
  • Landscaping design and aquatic planting by others

When fully operational the system will harvest 850 ML of stormwater per annum for reuse; therefore reducing potable water demand. Prevention of 850 ML of stormwater and associated contaminants from discharging to the gulf, therefore reducing adverse impacts on sea grasses and marine species. Reduced flood risk downstream of detention basins including the Christie Creek crossing of South Road.
