GHD in Tasmania is a leading consultancy in the state, employing more than 150 people with offices in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie.

Gordon Gutteridge established the Hobart office of GHD in 1937. He had a wealth of experience in water issues in Hobart, having reported to the City on the suitability of the Derwent River as a source of water in 1924, and serving on the Royal Commission to review water supply to the City in 1930.

Today the Hobart office has more than 120 people working in a range of market sectors.

GHD's Launceston office was opened in 1947 and now has more than 30 people. Our Burnie office was opened in 2008 with the acquisition of Johnson Design Service and now has 10 people.

Brighton Transport Projects

The Brighton Bypass Projects are being undertaken for the Tasmanian Government’s Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources (DIER) and involve upgrading of the Midland Highway to the north of Hobart. This includes the provision of an upgraded link between the East Derwent Highway at Bridgewater and the existing highway north of Pontville. The Brighton Bypass has been split into two sections, of which GHD is responsible for the design of the Northern Section project.

The Northern Section includes 4.8 km of new dual carriageway and 1.3 km of new two lane, two way highway, and includes a major interchange at Tea Tree Road and a roundabout at the existing Midland Highway. Structural works include a major new bridge over the Jordan River and smaller bridges over the Bagdad Rivulet and the Strathallan Rivulet a well as the structures associated with the interchange.

Printing Press Building for Hobart Mercury

The new AUD $9 million high-speed facillity, located in the Hobart Technopark, was designed by GHD, which provided the architectural detailing, structural and geotechnical engineering, all building services engineering, planning, environmental and traffic assessments. The EGO Group and Cardno Low and Hooke also contributed to the design.

Most notably, the new equipment allows the Hobart Mercury to output its own colour printing for the first time, avoiding the current need to fly in colour work overnight from Melbourne.

Robert Lowther

Rob Lowther is a Mechanical Engineer with more than 20 years’ experience in planning, design, construction, supervision and commissioning of water and wastewater infrastructure throughout Europe, the Middle East, South Africa and the Asia Pacific.

Rob took on the role of Operating Centre Manager for GHD Tasmania in early 2011. Prior to this appointment he spent 10 years in GHD’s Brisbane office. During this period he performed senior management roles as well as managing large projects from conception through to commissioning and operation.

In addition to completing challenging projects and delighting clients, Rob gets great satisfaction from seeing his staff learn and develop.

Alex Brownlie

Alex Brownlie is one of Tasmania’s foremost strategic and statutory planners. He has more than 30 years' experience in both the public sectors of Local and State Government as well as private practice. Alex has particular experience in the preparation of planning schemes and associated amendment processes, and the assessment of complex development applications under the legislative requirements of the Resource Management and Planning System of Tasmania.

Alex manages GHD's Launceston office and is committed to the mentoring and professional development of his team members and colleagues.
