Indigenous opportunities under the Carbon Farming Initiative Reforestation Methodology

The Australian Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities engaged GHD to prepare feasibility case studies for four Indigenous groups interested in establishing a carbon farming reforestation project on their land.

Under the Carbon Farming Initiative, landholders can generate carbon credits that can be traded on domestic and international carbon markets. Indigenous communities’ participation in carbon trading is identified as a means to address key land management issues of interest to each community, as well as to provide wider economic and social opportunities. GHD completed feasibility studies for the Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council, the Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation and the Umpila Land Trust and Cape York Institute.
