New Perth to Bunbury Highway
The New Perth to Bunbury Highway (NPBH), now referred to partly
as the Kwinana Freeway Extension and partly the Forrest Highway, is
one of Western Australia’s most significant infrastructure
projects. It comprised the design and construction of 70.5 km of
dual carriageway including 19 individual bridge structures, some
constructed in difficult founding conditions.
Tony Kinlay, Manager Bridges, said the sheer scale of the $700m
project was a major challenge for the Southern Gateway Alliance,
which comprised GHD, Leighton Contractors and WA Limestone in
partnership with Main Roads Western Australia.
"The project required the placement of over 70,000m3
of insitu concrete for a variety of incrementally launched bridges,
precast bridges and other major structures. Over
10,000m3 was utilised in the provision of precast
concrete elements, including Tee-Roff beams weighing up to
140t."
