Auckland

GHD’s Auckland office was opened in 2005 and has over 130 people with a diverse range of skills. Whether it is planners, climate change and sustainability advisors, urban designers and landscape architects, environmental consultants, engineers, surveyors or business consultants – you will find them in the Auckland office.

Located within the heart of Auckland city, GHD Auckland supports a network of 16 offices throughout New Zealand, employing more than 400 people. The office in the ASB Tower was designed by our architects to provide a modern and contemporary environment, an open yet flexible layout, and incorporates environmentally sustainable features throughout.

A significant achievement for the Auckland office is the success of the Clearharbour Alliance – a partnership between Metrowater, GHD, Opus and Downer EDI to separate wastewater and stormwater pipes in inner city suburbs. In the transportation sector we have a team of people who work with the Auckland Traffic Management Unit to manage the region's 700 sets of traffic lights, along with people working on projects in the marine, aviation and rail sectors. Led from the CBD office, and utilising skills from across the world, GHD was responsible for the environmentally sustainable features of New Zealand’s first Green Star rated school.

Our wider New Zealand and Pacific business serves clients in the water, energy and resources, environment, property and buildings, and transportation sectors. Our clients are leaders in managing New Zealand’s infrastructure development and built environment. They face complex situations and ongoing challenges, and we are privileged to work alongside them.

A key aspect of our performance is our ability to attract and retain the best talent. Our people are united in a common purpose and commitment to our values - Teamwork, Respect and Integrity. GHD has been recognised as one of New Zealand's Best Places to Work by employee research consultancy JRA.

When water hits the road

Mission Heights

Managing stormwater is one of Auckland City's many activities. Auckland City aims to protect Auckland's unique and valued environment and allow for future urban growth. It is Auckland City's job to assist Auckland City residents to make sure stormwater is managed properly on their land, and to safely remove stormwater across the city.

Auckland City Transport’s drainage assets consist of approximately 27,300 catchpits, 2,100 soakholes and 450 manholes within the Auckland isthmus and Hauraki Gulf islands.  The condition and performance of these structures is critical not only to the city’s wider drainage and reticulation system, but also to the efficiency, safety and reliability of the transportation network.

Merton Road

Mission Heights

GHD is pleased to announce the completion of the Merton Road Shared Cycleway in Auckland.  With innovation and team work at its core, the cycleway project is a success story for GHD, HEB and Auckland City Council. One kilometre in length, the cycleway presented a number of unique and interesting challenges for all parties involved. The preliminary design and consultation began in April 2009.

Considerable stakeholder management was crucial for this project and as part of the review process, included liaison with various groups including Cycling Action Auckland. The co-ordination of three contracts into one (OHUG, Physical Works and Resurfacing) was successfully executed to ensure optimum timeliness and cost saving.

When building two new schools on a green fields site in Auckland, Hawkins Construction approached GHD as we could provide the breadth of skills they needed, from Green Star Accredited professionals, to engineers and landscape architects – plus many more.

Situated in Flat Bush, the two schools, with shared library, administration, gymnasium and performing arts centre, will eventually cater for over 1,800 students. And a ‘fast-tracked’ timeframe meant the project was not only of a large scale, but also required completion with swift exactitude. Working closely with ASC Architects, Hawkins Construction, Ministry of Education and the New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC), the tight timeframe required a strong partnering approach and working as a team. In the words of GHD project manager Thomson: “People make projects, not process”.

Hamilton Water Treatment Plant

Hamilton water

Hamilton City Council wanted “A world class Water Treatment Station that delivers the water needs of the city and exceeds or meets the Drinking Water Standards of New Zealand at the lowest whole of life cost.” The original Hamilton Water Treatment Station (WTS) was a conventional clarification and filtration plant with a nominal capacity of 80 ML/d which draws water from the Waikato River. In recent years, increasing levels of unpleasant taste and odour have occurred in the river as algal levels increased. Cyanotoxins levels above detectable levels have also been found.

Hamilton City Council hence commissioned GHD to produce a ‘20 year strategy plan’ for the WTS. The plan evaluated a range of upgrade options for both capacity and treatment performance.
