50 MW Biliran Geothermal Power Plant, ORKA Energy

GHD acted as Owner’s Engineer for the Biliran Geothermal Power Plant jointly owned by FEDCO and ORKA Energy. Our scope of works included the design of the access roads and pads, temporary basecamp, domestic water supply, electrical supply and vehicle equipment stockyard, and rehabilitation works for the airstrip and jetty. GHD also managed the geotechnical investigations for geohazard assessments, slope stability assessments, and LiDAR surveys. In addition, the team carried out environmental audits and sought tree cutting permits.

54 MW Pililla Wind Farm, Alternergy Wind One Corporation

Alternergy Wind One Corporation engaged GHD as Owner’s Engineer for the construction of its 54 MW wind farm in Pililla, Rizal, Philippines. GHD provided a project management team to oversee the construction of access roads, shallow and piled foundation, transmission line, and switchyard as well as the installation of 27 two-megawatt turbine units. The GHD team had the project installed and commissioned two weeks ahead of proposed schedule.

81 MW Pagudpud Wind Farm, Ilocos Norte, Philippines

GHD provided a variety of services to support the on-time completion the 115 kV transmission Line, 115/34.5 kV substation and the 34.5 kV collection system for the 81 MW Pagudpud Wind Farm for North Luzon Renewable Energy Corporation.

Our roles on the project included ranged from lender’s technical advisor to owner’s engineer.

Acoje Nickel Project, ENK

GHD conducted a bankable feasibility study to cover the key components of the development of ENK’s Acoje nickel mine in the Philippines. This included a concept design for the tailings storage facility, water management planning and supply, power optioneering and transmission line investigations. In addition, GHD undertook environmental studies that included habitat mapping, surface water sampling and project management recommendations.

Ambuklao Dam Geotechnical Investigations, SN Aboitiz

GHD has undertaken a number of consulting services for SN Aboitiz (SNAP), including environmental studies, hydrological studies and structural assessments.

GHD also conducted geotechnical investigations to support SNAP’s intended plans to rehabilitate the structures of Ambuklao Dam.

AMRC Wind Farm Project

GHD Livigunn was employed by Bachy Soletanche to provide pile fatigue analysis for two wind turbines proposed for the new Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre and Knowledge Transfer Centre at the University of Sheffield.

The Powerwind 56 turbine is the first of its kind to be installed in the UK. It includes advanced design features and has a 56 mdiameter rotor head attached to a 71 m tower.

Burgos Wind Project Environmental and Social Impact Assessment

Energy Development Corp. (EDC) commissioned GHD to complete several assessments and plans for the expansion of its wind farm project in Burgos, Ilocos Norte, including: the environmental impact assessment and Environmental Performance Report and Management Plan. GHD’s engagement extended to the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for the 150 MW Burgos wind project, the operating transmission line connecting it to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) substation in Laoag City, and the jetty.

Dendrobium Mine Hydrogeology

The Illawarra region contains some of Australia's best coking coal resources. These have been mined since the 1880's, providing coal for both export through Port Kembla and for use in the steelworks (now operated by BlueScope Steel).

To maintain supply for steel making, BHP Billiton is developing the Dendrobium Coal Mine. This underground mine will recover coal from the lowermost 3.2m of the 9m thick Wongawilli Seam by longwall mining methods (see an individual chock in the panel to the right) at a rate of up to 5Mtpa ROM for 30 to 40 years. Coal from the Wongawilli Seam is an essential component of 'Illawarra Blend' premium coking coal, which is known for its specific steelmaking qualities.

Design of Ash Storage Facilities—San Miguel Consolidated Power Corp.

Two 300 MW coal fired power plants owned by San Miguel Global Power Holdings, a subsidiary of San Miguel Corporation, required the provision of ash storage facilities capable of receiving bottom and fly ash for a design life of 25 years. GHD performed a site investigation, then conceptualised, designed and proposed an innovative, cost-efficient solution that used a dry stack methodology instead of a conventional ash lagoon. GHD’s commission was then extended to detailed design of the ash storage facility.

Douglas Water Hydro Scheme

GHD Livigunn provided civil and structural engineering support, architectural detailing, flood risk assessment and hydraulic design for Pierse Contracting Ltd/RWE Npower’s 3MW hydro-electric power station located in the mountains above Inverary, Scotland.

The scheme consisted of two reinforced concrete intake weirs connected to a Powerhouse Building by a 2.4 km long pipeline. This was designated as 1200mm diameter ductile iron reducing to 1000DN diameter further along the pipeline. The 2.4 m3/s design flow generates electricity through dual Pelton turbines located in the powerhouse building.

Located off the grid in a remote part of the County, the school generates its electricity with two old, oversized diesel generators. GHD was engaged to find a solution to reduce costs and improve reliability while incorporating renewable energy. We assisted the School Board in obtaining funding and designing a diesel battery hybrid system that is “plug and play” ready for the addition of photovoltaic panels pending additional funding.

Hellrigg Wind Farm Pile Gatigue Analysis

GHD Livigunn provided pile fatigue analysis to Bachy Soletanche appointed by the main contractor Hanson Contracting to build the foundations for the Hellrigg Wind Farm in a remote location near the Solway Firth between Cumbria and Dumfries and Galloway.

The project involved the piling for four large (396ft) wind turbines with a total generating capacity of 10MW. The piles were constructed on unstable ground, and as such, each base required 16 x 900mm-diameter piles with depths varying from 25.0m to 38.0m.

Jackson – Moomba Oil Pipeline

The objective of the Jackson – Moomba pipeline from Jackson in southwest Queensland to Moomba in north eastern South Australia is to optimise the transport of oil from Jackson fields to Santos’ existing Port Bonython facility just north of Adelaide. 

GHD provided Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) for the oil pipeline and facilities. Which had an initial operational capability to pump 2,880 m3/d (18,000 bpd).

Managing Rail Safety

To enable mining to safely continue in a high-use area, GHD's Newcastle people developed an innovative, 'world first', safety management system.

This allowed Xstrata to maintain its mining operations beneath the railway line without disturbing train operations above.

Millerton Cutting

The Millerton cutting was constructed in 2006 to provide a safer and more reliable access to Solid Energy’s Stockton Mine on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Unfortunately, the 30m high rock cutting suffered from stress release and failure resulting in a highly fractured rock mass posing an unacceptable level of instability and rock fall hazard to the 1000+ mine vehicles using the road each day. The physical environment (8m of rainfall per annum), the unfavourable geological structure and the rock mass properties have also exacerbated the problem.

Solid Energy has appointed GHD to complete a geological and geotechnical survey and mapping exercise in order to complete a semi quantitative risk assessment.

Northern Bowen Basin Transmission Network Reinforcement Project

Electricity demand in the Northern Bowen Basin region is forecast to grow strongly over the next five years. This growth is being driven by development in the resource and industrial sectors, together with associated population growth.  To reliably meet this growing electricity demand and support the region’s development, Powerlink Queensland is proposing to reinforce the existing network in the area by constructing two new substations - one at Moorvale South and the other at Peak Downs North - and new transmission lines between Nebo, Moorvale South, Ergon Energy's proposed Broadlea Substation, and Peak Downs North.

GHD was appointed by Powerlink to undertake the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process for the project.

Nuclear Power – Springfields Fuels Ltd Compressed Air Heaters

During a routine inspection, Springfields Fuels Ltd identified that the header pipework on their site compressed air supply system was in need of replacement.

GHD Livigunn was commissioned to design replacement pipe headers so that the new pipes could be installed with the existing system operational and the change-over could be completed without significant interruption to the site compressed air supply.

Pagbilao Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessment, Therma Luzon Incorporated

Thermal Luzon Inc is considering partnering with the current owner and operator of the Pagbilao Power Station for the construction and operation of a third unit and associated facilities within the plant. Prior to finalising the agreements, GHD was appointed to prepare the Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessment, focusing on the area’s soil and groundwater, to determine possible or recognised environmental conditions.

Redondo Peninsula Energy Geohazard Study

GHD was commissioned by RP Energy to undertake a detailed natural terrain hazard assessment of its proposed 600 MW coal fired power station site near Subic Bay. This project involved unmanned aerial vehicle imagery procurement and mapping, GIS analysis, detailed geomorphological and hazard mapping, definition of failure mechanisms for a major cut slope failure and above slope landslides and rock/boulder falls, and detailing/designing of practical related remedial works.

Southland Lignite

GHD was commissioned by Solid Energy to provide geotechnical and geological assessment of 7 km of soft sediment core through the Miocene deposits of the Gore Lignite Measures.

The study was required to delineate the geological and geotechnical parameters and domains of the basin sediments in the context of the proposed open cast lignite mine.

Stoke Bardolph WwTW Biogas Plant

The Stoke Bardolph project involved the construction of a 2-MW Energy Crop Digestion and Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant on land adjacent to Stoke Bardolph Sewage Works in Nottingham. The purpose of the project was to provide power generation from bio solids which are used as an agro fertilizer to grow maize.

The plant comprises 10,000m2 of silage clamps, milling and fermentation followed by digestion with the biogas being used to power the CHP plant. Power generated is used to supply the adjoining Sewage Works, with any surplus being fed into the National Grid network. Stoke Bardolph is the first large-scale CHP plant in the UK to be powered from maize energy crops.

Telecommunications upgrade

ElectraNet, South Australia's electricity transmission specialist, upgraded its telecommunications network extending approximately 900km. This upgrade was identified in a draft Telecommunications Network Strategic Plan prepared by GHD.

This upgrade allows ElectraNet to service South Australia's electricity tranmission requirements with up-to-date technology and an increased telecommunications network capacity.

Weed Beach Park Master Planning, Darien, Connecticut USA

Weed Beach is an extraordinarily valuable asset to the Town of Darien. Located along the Connecticut shoreline of Long Island Sound, this park offers both active and passive recreational activities.

In May 2005, the Town of Darien Parks & Recreation Commission retained GHD to prepare a Master Plan for Weed Beach Park. The Master Plan was for the upgrade and expansion of an existing, heavily used, 22± acre park facility that contains a public beach, light craft launch area, picnic area, tennis courts, paddle tennis courts, children's play area, a number of buildings, 250± parking spaces and undeveloped woods. GHD services for this project included participation in public meetings, public outreach, park design and implementation phase assistance.
