Mining

Efficient heavy haul supply chains earn the best reputation and competitive advantage.

Investing in improved distribution technology and embracing sustainable pathways for development, including carbon reduction initiatives and environmental rehabilitation, can result in improved volume profitability and more effective community management.

From mine concept to closure, GHD considers geological, mine planning, materials handling, metallurgical, tailings, environmental management, operational and financial objectives to create optimal solutions for the many conflicting objectives in mine design and development.

With vast experience working with communities in rural, remote and urban locations, and the ability to assist both local and international clients, GHD provides sustainable management strategies to protect and enhance Indigenous cultural heritage, reduce environmental impact, maximise efficiency and enhance continuous improvement.

We help clients evolve to meet the demands of creating stakeholder value.

Dendrobium Mine Hydrogeology

image

The Illawarra region contains some of Australia's best coking coal resources. These have been mined since the 1880's, providing coal for both export through Port Kembla and for use in the steelworks (now operated by BlueScope Steel).

To maintain supply for steel making, BHP Billiton is developing the Dendrobium Coal Mine. This underground mine will recover coal from the lowermost 3.2m of the 9m thick Wongawilli Seam by longwall mining methods (see an individual chock in the panel to the right) at a rate of up to 5Mtpa ROM for 30 to 40 years. Coal from the Wongawilli Seam is an essential component of 'Illawarra Blend' premium coking coal, which is known for its specific steelmaking qualities.

Gladstone Coal Terminal expansion

image

As part of the expansion to increase the capacity at Gladstone Port Authority‘s RG Tanna Coal Terminal from 30mtpa to 60mtpa, works were undertaken to increase storage capacity.

The terminal receives coal by rail from the southern Bowen Basin (from Gregory in the north to South Blackwater) and from Moura and Callide.

Millerton Cutting

image

The Millerton cutting was constructed in 2006 to provide a safer and more reliable access to Solid Energy’s Stockton Mine on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Unfortunately, the 30m high rock cutting suffered from stress release and failure resulting in a highly fractured rock mass posing an unacceptable level of instability and rock fall hazard to the 1000+ mine vehicles using the road each day. The physical environment (8m of rainfall per annum), the unfavourable geological structure and the rock mass properties have also exacerbated the problem.

Solid Energy has appointed GHD to complete a geological and geotechnical survey and mapping exercise in order to complete a semi quantitative risk assessment.

Upgrade for the Concentrate Leach Thickener Plant at Olympic Dam

image

GHD has completed a selection study for the upgrading of the concentrate leaching and thickening operations at Olympic Dam for BHP Billiton.

As a consequence of this, the definition phase of the thickening project is currently underway. The project requires replacement of the existing equipment with a completely new design, an increase in capacity, and various enhancements and improvement.
