Auckland City Library

image

Despite its prominent position in the CBD, the Auckland Central City Library has struggled to achieve a significant presence in the city. The facility opened in 1971 and substantial design modifications were undertaken in 1980. In early 2004, GHD assisted in the development of a future strategy for the library. The strategy addressed challenges including transforming innercity demographics, streetscape issues, and how the library could be better used by key stakeholders such as the nearby art galleries and university, Auckland city archives and various institutions.

The final design for the library alterations focused on achieving improved visibility and accessibility. One of the primary features of the project was the creation of a new entrance in the form of a lantern that connects to the library via a new café.
