Stormwater Run-off Treatment Facility

Adelaide City Council previously had issues with controlling stormwater run-off containing organic and other contaminants from a green waste facility in Adelaide’s parklands, adjacent to the Torrens River.

The council engaged GHD to undertake an investigation related to run-off volumes and contaminants, which identified there was an environmental risk associated with release of the stormwater from the site.

We liaised with regulatory authorities and the council to develop a stormwater management strategy. The aim was to improve the quality of the stormwater run-off from the green waste processing area by providing a collection and cost-effective treatment system.

GHD developed a simple and low capital cost solution with low maintenance requirements. This centred on a multi-stage process train, involving a gross pollutant trap for screening; sedimentation for grit particles; biological filtration to remove organic matter; and ammonia. This was followed by foam filtration to remove residual particles and some of the phosphorus. The water will be discharged if required, but the council is currently considering re-use through irrigation of plants and dust suppression at the site.

To assist Adelaide City Council with seeking tenders for the remediation work, GHD produced concept design drawings and an outline specification that was provided to invited tenderers. We also assisted the council with tender evaluation and construction period advice, in addition to commissioning and training of council staff.

The issue of controlling contaminants and organic matter from entering the waterways was resolved with a low cost and low maintenance solution, and a potential wastewater re-use opportunity has been identified.
