Air Monitoring in Western Australia

GHD conducted one of the most comprehensive ambient air monitoring programs ever to be undertaken by an Australian company, on the remote Burrup Peninsula in Western Australia.

The project, for Woodside Energy, on behalf of the North West Shelf Venture, involved GHD’s environmental team designing a program to monitor the ambient and occupational air quality around the Karratha gas plant and offshore facilities, particularly for benzene, toluene and xylene (BTX) emissions.

This two-stage program, including extensive occupational monitoring and fixed-point data collection, confirmed earlier modelling conclusions indicating safe ambient air. One of the project challenges was conducting over 600 specialist air analyses in laboratories located some 4500km away.

The program was part of the North West Shelf Venture’s air emission reduction strategy, which included a significant capital investment in new technology, as well as a detailed monitoring program to confirm previous modeling results that predicted BTX ambient air concentrations in the area were well within internationally accepted health standards.
