GHD completed the structural design for the Antiene Coal Unloader, built off the Main Northern Rail Line at Antiene in the Upper Hunter.

The Antiene Coal Unloader assists in securing New South Wales’ power supply by allowing coal to be transported from further afield and contributing to the continued viability of the Bayswater and Liddell power stations.

GHD developed the preliminary options for a rail loop, a conveyor and associated infrastructure connecting the existing facilities, and was later engaged to develop the detailed design for the rail loop, roads, buildings and amenities, transfer towers and dump hooper.

GHD’s design included the integration of the natural rock strata into the design of the dump hooper structural system and the use of arch girders to suspend the 2000 tonne bin and support the unloading train over the bin. GHD also completed the designs for six bridges, including crossings of the New England Highway and Lake Liddell.

The conveyor structures included a 5 km overland section and approximately 300 m of fully sealed suspended structures to prevent land contamination from spillage and washdown residues. A 700 tonne check weigh bin was also designed to verify coal tonnage accuracy. The bin was required to be shielded from wind loads in order to maintain weighing accuracy while providing maintenance access and calibration counterweight handling. The rectangular shaped bin has two outlets discharging into two vibratory feeders that deliver the coal to the power station conveyor.
