Australia China Environment Development Program (China)

The ACEDP is a five-year AUD$25 million Australian Government, AusAID initiative, designed to improve environmental protection and natural resource management (in particular, water) to balance the needs of the environment and human development in China.

GHD was appointed managing contractor on 1 July 2007. The program promotes high-level government-to-government environmental policy dialogue and capacity building, and aims to deliver the following outcomes:

  • Enduring partnerships between Australian and Chinese agencies
  • Strengthened environmental policy development
  • Implementation of pilot activities using sound environmental governance and practice

Core projects include:

  • Lake Tai water pollution treatment
  • Wetlands management policy, guidelines and capacity building
  • River health and environmental flows in China
  • Water ecology compensation policy and mechanism
  • Water rights and allocation trading in the Yellow River Basin
  • Large irrigation schemes – improving water efficiency through better irrigation district management, and water right trading
  • Trans-jurisdictional water pollution management
  • Inland river basin management – managing the threats to sustainable water resource development
  • Public participation in social and environmental impact assessment and basin water pollution control

These larger projects are currently supported by 11 smaller partnership projects between Chinese and Australian agencies.
