Ballina Foreshore Master Plan

River foreshore issues are potentially controversial and need strong community and council involvement if they are to be resolved. GHD completed a master plan for the Richmond River foreshore.

The plan, which was developed for the New South Wales Department of Lands and Ballina Shire Council, has received strong community, council and government support.

The foreshore master plan focused on 22 council and crown land sites situated along the foreshore of the Richmond River, between the Burns Point Ferry and the Missingham Bridge. The sites ranged in size from a few hundred square metres to more than nine hectares.

The foreshore master plan has been a successful follow-on project to the recreational boating study prepared for Ballina Shire Council by GHD Ballina in 2005.

The foreshore master plan promotes a range of broad and site-specific land use options for the sites with a strong emphasis on sustainability, the environment and improved community access to the foreshore.

In creating the plan, GHD and its clients placed a strong emphasis on consultation. They met with major stakeholders in the local community and took note of 75 public submissions before preparing the draft document.
