Having completed extensions and renovations to the Barunga Aged Care Facility, GHD was engaged to design and document the first retirement village in the Port Broughton region in South Australia. The client wanted to attract residents from the local towns and rural community with an affordable, well-designed and spacious retirement village.

The site, on the outskirts of the town, has a gentle gradient that affords views across the local gulf inlet. Site layout needed to take into account the number of residents and fact all the paths and roads had to be easy to walk. The resultant development provides gentle roads and paths with distant views wherever possible and large yards – a point of difference and appeal for the target market.

Demand has been such that stages one and two are nearly fully occupied. This means the rest of the project and community centre will be completed.

The success of the project demonstrates GHD’s understanding of local markets and its willingness to work closely with clients.

GHD, as the architectural consultant, has been responsible for:

  • Development of project brief with the client
  • Concept cesign, including design to facilitate full disabled site access and disabled compliant units
  • Preparation of construction drawings and specification documents
  • Site inspections and attendance
  • Defects inspections
