Beenyup WWTP Odour Control and Upgrade

GHD formed an alliance with Leightons, Black & Veatch, and the Water Corporation WA on a AUD$45 million wastewater treatment plant upgrade (from 100Ml/d to 120Ml/d with odour control).

The project included:

  • 15000sq m of tank covers together with 120,000 cubic metres per hour extraction and chemical scrubbing system
  • Pre-treatment upgrade including new step screens
  • Conveyors
  • Washpresses
  • Grit washing and disposal bins
  • Secondary treatment upgrade including conversion to Modified Ludzack-Ettinger (MLE) process with a recycle stream and new aeration tanks
  • Sludge treatment upgrade including new centrifuge dewatering plant and enlarged digesters.

GHD provided all of the design services, procurement and construction support.  A feature of the project was the way the  alliance pursued breakthrough ideas to deliver the project on time and within budget.

The electrical scope included extension to the 11kV ring main, new 11kV/415V substations, new 415V motor control centres, extensive variable speed drives, lighting and small power, and associated high and low voltage cabling. The new load totalled approximately 4 MVA.

Some of the areas were classified as hazardous due to the presence of methane, so the work included selection and installation of electrical equipment in hazardous areas.

This project was particularly challenging due to the need to keep the existing plant in continuous operation during the upgrade.

Due to environmental constraints, the substations utilised dry type transformers. Profibus-linked smart starters were used in the new motor control centres.
