Brewery upgrade in Queensland

The extension of the Carlton & United Brewery at Yatala in Queensland has more than doubled its production capacity.

The 3 million-hectalitre expansion of the brewery increased annual capacity to 5.5 million hectalitres. The GHD team provided structural, mechanical, civil, hydraulics, electrical, architectural, water process and chemical services, as well as project management contract administration.

In particular, the team provided key mechanical and structural design services for the kilometres of elevated piping and the construction of the huge fermentation and storage cellars. This is the second extension completed for this client over the past decade.

The fermenter deck for these cellars is a concrete suspended slab that must support 28 x 400,000 litre vessels each weighing 450 tonnes. This structure alone measures 58m by 35m. The slab is supported on concrete columns that cantilever from 2m diameter bored piles founded in shallow rock.

The project was delivered in 10 months during continuous 24/7 operation of the brewery.

During this upgrade, GHD completed a water reuse project that now provides recycled tertiary treated water for brewery use, saving millions of cubic metres of water each year.
