Bundaberg Ring Road

The Bundaberg Ring Road is the biggest single investment a state government has ever made in the Bundaberg area.

When built, the Ring Road will provide motorists with an alternative route around Bundaberg, ease congestion on inner city streets and reduce travel time from the Isis Highway to the eastern suburbs.

GHD was engaged by the Department of Main Roads to provide contract management services to facilitate the successful delivery of this major project. The contract management team involved resources from the Sunshine Coast and Bundaberg offices, involving tender documentation, assessment and recommendation, management of service relocations and superintendent services.

The project is unfolding in two stages. Stage One involves the construction of 7.5 kilometres of new two-lane carriageway, including four bridges, two major at grade intersections and four minor at grade intersections. There were a variety of challenges ranging from managing electricity supply relocation works, founding of piles in difficult conditions, working over live traffic with the construction of an overpass, liaison with the community to limit disruption due to dust and noise issues and the urgent relocation of a section of cane rail.

Stage Two involves the construction of 6.8 kilometres of new two lane carriageway, including one bridge over the north coast rail line, one major at grade intersection and three minor at grade intersections. The construction of the overpass over the north coast rail line required considerable liaison with Queensland Rail. Construction has involved the excavation and compacting of 165,000 cubic metres of embankment fill from ‘borrow’ areas on site.

Pavement Engineering

Your single most valuable asset is arguably the pavement system within your network. We understand that pavements are subjected to static and dynamic loads as well as exposure to the elements; only sound engineering judgment, informed by experienced and qualified staff, can provide cost concious and appropriate solutions to your pavement challenges.

We demonstrate an innovative, sustainable approach through our relationships with research centres of excellence at Delft (Holland) Wisconsin (USA) Stellenbosch (South Africa) Transit New Zealand UWA (Western Australia) and ARRB (Australia).
