GHD provides specialist geotechnical and tailings advice to numerous metalliferous mine waste disposal sites in Australia, such as BHP Billiton’s Cannington Mine.

Located south-east of Mount Isa in Queensland, Cannington is an underground mine producing silver, lead and zinc concentrates. GHD has been involved in the Cannington Mine since start-up in the mid-1990s.

Major works done by GHD includes the design of the original tailings storage facility and subsequent upstream raising works, and input to pre-feasibility and feasibility studies.

The most recent work includes the detailed design of raises to both Stage 1 and Stage 2 tailings dams. Other recent work includes conducting the annual integrity inspection of the dams and providing general engineering advice to the operators.
