NPC proposed the development of additional berth sites within the South Arm of the Hunter River, in the Port of Newcastle. The developments would assist NPC in meeting its objectives of diversifying trade and development options within the Port.

GHD was engaged by Newcastle Port Corporation to undertake an Environmental Assessment and associated engineering studies for the capital dredging of ten berth box sites and ancillary channel widening in the South Arm in Hunter River, Port of Newcastle.

The following key studies were part of the Environmental Assessment (EA) project:

  • Foreshore stability analysis
  • Hydrodynamic assessment
  • Spoil disposal and re-use options assessment
  • Aquatic ecology assessment
  • Noise and vibration assessment
  • Air Quality Assessment
  • Traffic Assessment
  • European and Indigenous heritage assessment
  • Environmental Risk Assessment

The EA was submitted to the Department of Planning (DoP) under State Environmental Planning Policy (Major Development) 2005 and for assessment under Part 3A of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act.
