In order to meet the requirements of the Queensland state
government's Coastal Management Plan, Cairns Regional Council
initiated the Cleaner Seas Initiative. The council is now
undertaking major upgrades of four major wastewater
treatment plants over the next five years.
The Northern, Southern, Edmonton and Marlin Coast wastewater
treatment plants will all be upgraded to increase capacity and
to include biological nutrient removal processes.
This project is being delivered as an alliance between five
organisations, including GHD. Our team is providing civil and
structural design leadership in what is presently the largest
wastewater project in regional Queensland.
The completed wastewater treatment plants will include
industry-leading membrane filtration that will result in lower
impacts on the waterways and reef systems surrounding Cairns.
As one of the largest wastewater membrane projects in Australia,
GHD’s teamwork approach involved close collaboration between staff
and Cleaner Seas Alliance participants.
