Reducing energy consumption in dissolved air flotation (DAF)

Demonstrating the benefits of innovation transfer where concepts that are well accepted in one discipline can then be adapted and introduced to solve issues confronting a completely different context, this water treatment innovation was developed by one of GHD's younger mechanical engineers, who looked at the mature Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) water treatment process with a fresh perspective and enquiring mind. Inspired by widely adopted energy recovery devices (ERDs) used to reduce energy consumption in the desalination process, GHD's engineer designed a unique way (patent pending) to incorporate an ERD within the energy intensive DAF process to reduce its energy consumption by up to 50%. Not content to stop there, GHD's inventor then developed a new type of ERD (patent pending) that can be used both within the DAF and desalination processes, providing a range of design and operational benefits over existing technologies.
