Energy Australia Cable Tunnel

GHD provided integral design and management services for the $40 million CBD cable tunnel, which stretches for 1.5 kilometres between Surry Hills and Haymarket.

Measuring 16m2 in cross section, the tunnel is 35m below ground at its deepest point and links four substations to the Sydney CBD.

The tunnel alignment was excavated over a 12-month period using roadheader, and both shafts were constructed using more traditional top-down excavation methods.

GHD was engaged by Energy Australia to provide project management services during construction and commissioning phases.

This commission built on earlier concept work completed by GHD, providing a seamless transition between feasibility assessment, concept development and construction.

As the Principal’s representative, GHD was responsible for administering D&C contracts totalling $28 million for the tunnel construction, installation and commissioning of tunnel services, and installation of over 25 km of 132 kV power cables.

The tunnel now carries eight 132 kV power circuits to different parts of the electricity grid, with the provision for an additional four circuits to cope with the anticipated level of future demand.
