In terms of scale of investment the ECRL will represent one of the most significant rail infrastructure project ever undertaken in the Sydney Metropolitan Network.

The rail link now connects to Chatswood via Epping, providing an alternative route for train services from Sydney’s outer west and Central Coast to access the Sydney CBD. The link is also crucial to the further development of the rail network into Sydney’s North Western Sector.

The first milestone in the progressive development process was the provision of the link from Epping to Chatswood, connecting the 12km Main North line to the North Shore line. The route is entirely in tunnel, and will comprise 24 kilometres of twin bored running tunnel and 5 new underground stations. In addition to the bored tunnels, there will be a complex cut and cover structure to cross the Lane Cove River, a site under close scrutiny from an environmental viewpoint.

GHD, as principal consultant, is responsible for design management of the collaborative GHD/Parson Brinkerhoff design and techical team, managing the interface with THJV, Alstom and several government agencies, at the same time providing geotechnical investigtion, review and design services.
