GHD provided planning, design and construction phase services for the Eurallumina Sa Foxi Red Mud Basin located in Sardinia, Italy.

The Sa Foxi Red Mud Basin is located at Portoscuso, which is adjacent to an industrial area, environmental fish habitat and the Mediterranean Sea. The site is restricted and is sensitive to environmental and community issues.

The existing red mud basin was nearing capacity and there was no provision for expanding the red mud basin footprint. GHD provided an innovation solution using upstream construction, which met all environmental, and safety requirements, resulting in significant savings in capital costs.

GHD is represented on national and international technical committees including Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM), Australian National Committee on Large Dams (ANCOLD) and close links with organisations such as the Australian Centre for Geomechanics (ACG).
