Goulburn-Murray Rural Water

This building, completed in mid-2005, makes a fresh statement in a town that features ageing building stock, while also managing to be a practical and economic structure. The addition to the Kerang in northern Victoria houses Goulburn-Murray Water’s regional administration and engineering staff.

The unusual waveform theme expressed in the shaping of the main and supplementary roofs relates to the client’s waveform logo and to their business of harvesting, storing and distributing water resources across northern Victoria.

Building materials are modern but still reflect inland tradition, using Colorbond coated steel sheeting and fibre cement sheet panelling with long-lasting polyurethane finish.

Landscaping treatment also reflects the need for conservation of the water resources of the region, with limited lawn areas supplemented by planting of native species in mulched beds, which again are formed into wave-like patterns.

The office and conference wings of the building are used to form a courtyard oasis for the use of staff and visitors, with a mini bubbling water feature, surrounded by native grasses and shaded by an extensive white cypress pergola. Energy conservation measures include the use of solar hot water and solar efficient glazing.
