Gove Alumina Refinery Red Mud Management, Northern Territory

GHD has provided specialist engineering services to the Gove Alumina Refinery since 1982. The work has included planning, investigation and management of geotechnical and tailings advice for civil works in the residue disposal area.

This included detailed design and construction supervision of some 250 hectares of tailings storage, including upstream embankment construction, caustic liquor conservation methods, embankment stability, water balance models and design of drainage systems.

Recent work has included the revision of long-term residue disposal plan (35+ years), certification of new areas, mud farming monitoring, vegetation of slopes, wave overtopping studies, ongoing integrity inspections, embankment groundwater monitoring and providing active advice as the tailings dry stack develops.
