Guide Dogs Victoria

GHD architects have designed a stylish contemporary new education centre for Guide Dogs Victoria.

Set among the bushland along the Yarra River in Kew, the proposed new building will provide a central venue for training, education and administration activities for the association. GHD designed the facility to consolidate the various campus buildings. It will present a fresh image by providing a new entrance experience and arrival point in a low, lean envelope.

The venue will provide a series of flexible, multi-purpose presentation and seminar spaces that are scalable to suit a variety of functions and activities. The design maximises north light while allowing natural cross-ventilation. The selection of reclaimed native timber cladding and long span timber beams are basic elements in building with sustainable principles, allowing a long life, loose fit structure that can be adapted over time.

The main education facilities are raised to allow discretely located parking below, and the cantilevered form overlooks the river taking advantage of the parkland setting and creating views in and out of the site. The new design links together the existing buildings and the environment creating a strong entrance and a sense of place.
