Malaysia has embarked on a major program to develop its energy
resources, with the provision of hydroelectric power as a core
program component.
Sarawak Energy Berhad engaged GHD to conduct
both pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, encompassing
technical and financial issues, for the Baleh hydroelectricity
project.
This initiative is part of the Sarawak
Corridor of Renewable Energy Plan, which focuses on developing the
state's energy resources, including hydropower, coal, natural gas
and petroleum.
As part of this plan, the client intends to
develop several large hydroelectric dams to power the
energy-intensive industries that will form an energy hub for
Malaysia.
The pre-feasibillity study on the design and
dimension of the project scheme, and a cost estimation
and economic comparison study, were completed between December
2007 and February 2008.
According to Kho Lip Khiong, Project Director
of Baleh HEP Sarawak, “Further to completing the pre-feasibility
study in a short timeframe to meet client requirements, we were
also awarded the full feasibility study which commenced in June
2008. The spirit of teamwork between GHD personnel and the client’s
professional team is a key factor to the success of this
project.”
The services provided for the feasibility
study include highly specialised skills in project management,
hydrology, supervision, dams, and environmental management of dams
and hydropower.
Our people in Australia, New Zealand and
Malaysia are collaborating to deliver on these projects. A new GHD
office has also been opened at Kuching in East Malaysia to support
the project.
In December 2008, GHD was engaged to deliver
the pre-feasibility study for the Baleh Run of River Hydroelectric
project and Putai & Serani Hydroelectric project.
