Kennedy Point Wharf

Share on:

Our team, led by Mark Bialik and Geoffrey Farquhar, developed a design to reconstruct the existing wharf, with minimum disruption to operations. Construction is set to commence mid-2018.

Managed from Auckland, collaboration across our global operations and connected network saw the CAD model and new structure prepared in Chile, design verification and specifications in Australia, and the geotechnical investigation, consent application and environmental assessment in Auckland.

Auckland Transport assessed seismic hazards and instructed our team to increase Civil Defence rating for the structure by providing infrastructure integrity for seismic events as it is the primary access point for vehicles and road freight to Waiheke Island. Opportunity was also taken to address the required road maintenance for vehicles brought by ferry.

A planned boat ramp extension that had previously been postponed, provided an opportunity to create a separable portion of the wharf project, providing an alternative berthing for vessels during construction. This reduces risk of construction delay - the contractor has a strong incentive to finish the enabling works and start the main wharf. This will also generate circa. 20% reduction in costs due to reduced management along with savings in piling works and disposal of excavated and demolished materials.

The figure below shows the footprint of the new wharf and extension of associated road works.
