Kingscliff Sewage Treatment Plant

GHD was instrumental in delivering a complex, high capacity sewage treatment plant in the northern New South Wales town of Kingscliff. The plant not only met all operational requirements, but also achieved rapid commissioning and compliance with new environmental licence provisions.

GHD worked with Tweed Shire Council for four years to deliver the project, playing a key role in all stages from planning through to commissioning. The project was completed with the assistance of GHD’s Brisbane office.

GHD’s work included an environmental impact study, concept design review and verification, a geotechnical report, detailed design and tender documentation, and a sludge handling concept review. GHD also provided ongoing advice during construction and commissioning.

The plant was designed with a 25,000 equivalent person capacity that can be doubled if required. The design has also introduced first-time technology in the region in the form of a modified carousel-type activated sludge process to yield low-treated effluent ammonia as well as low total nitrogen and total phosphorus.

The design allows for low noise and odour impacts as well as a significant improvement in treated effluent quality compared to the old plant.
