The riverfront precinct in one of China’s most famous tourist
cities is being transformed into a vibrant urban space.
GHD’s Beijing and Changsa offices recently won an international
competition to provide the urban design that will revitalise the
waterfront precinct of the city of Zhangjiajie, on the Lishui River
in Hunan province, in the world heritage-listed Zhangjiajie
national park.
The team delivered the master plan, architectural design,
landscape design and recommendations for an integrated urban road
transport network.
The urban design project covers both sides of a 12km stretch of
the Lishui River, encompassing a total planning area of
approximately 930 hectares. The design focus, in sympathy with the
surrounding national park, is to create a "forest city" in keeping
with the local traditions and culture, but also one with a very
modern urban character, reflecting the city’s role as a major
destination for international tourism.
Dr Liu Liang, Business Stream Leader, Buildings says, "This
scheme will help to grant Zhangjiajie city a fresh spirit, one in
which we respect the city’s heritage while also confirming its
modern role in the world".
The Zhangjiajie project showcases the GHD China team’s
integrated design capability, from area planning, urban development
and design, to architecture and landscape design, in addition to
its services in intelligent transport systems design and
environmental sustainability.
According to Dr Liu, the planning team “...is highly committed
to capturing more exciting design projects like this and we are
very confident in delivering outstanding and innovative design
outcomes."
